The iconic dome of Hagia Sophia, known for its impressive architecture and unique mosaics, is being dismantled as part of restoration works being carried out at the historic monument. The process is part of a broader conservation plan that began last year and is considered necessary to preserve the dome's structural stability and historical authenticity.

Turkish authorities say they will keep the interior mosaics intact, focusing exclusively on the exterior of the dome. A special international committee has been assigned to oversee the works, as Hagia Sophia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the same time, Turkey's General Directorate of Foundations has pledged to cooperate with the international committees and respect the historical significance of the dome.

The dismantling is considered necessary due to the extensive damage the dome has suffered, especially after the conversion of the church into a mosque, which appears to have worsened the damage. Work is expected to begin in spring 2024, while the use of materials and techniques consistent with the Ottoman period is considered crucial to maintaining the monument's authentic character. In addition, the creation of a digital replica of Hagia Sophia, based on advanced scanning techniques, will ensure the accurate restoration of the dome, even in the event of an earthquake.

The decision was accelerated when a video was released showing fragments falling from the dome, which highlighted the need for immediate intervention. Limited conservation efforts had already been made in the past, but UNESCO scientists had pointed out that the problems required more drastic measures. The last extensive conservation work on the monument was carried out by the Fossati brothers in 1847, while the current restoration represents the greatest challenge for the protection of this unique monument.
