Arrest of a 54-year-old Albanian in Igoumenitsa with 75 kilos of cannabis

Greek authorities have identified a significant quantity of drugs in northwestern Greece, as part of controls to prevent the trafficking of substances from the Greek-Albanian border into the interior of the country.

According to police information, man of Albanian origin, 54 years old, a permanent resident of Delvinos, was arrested on Saturday afternoon in a rural area near Igoumenitsa, while attempting to transport a large quantity of cannabis into greek territory.

During a search of the vehicle he was driving, police officers discovered three travel bags with a total of 51 packages of raw cannabis, weighing almost 75 kilosAs the investigation revealed, the quantity had been received through an uncontrolled border crossing and was intended for further movement within the country.

In addition to drugs, the authorities proceeded to impoundment of the vehicle used for the transport, as well as a mobile phone, which is being examined in the context of the preliminary investigation for possible connections with organized crime rings.

According to police sources, the arrested person is alleged to have previous involvement with law enforcement authorities in his country of origin, an element taken into account by the Greek authorities.

This case adds to a long series of seizures in recent times. Since the beginning of autumn, Greek police have identified and seized approximately 775 kilograms of cannabis, quantities estimated to have come from Albania.

Incidents have been recorded both in both land and sea routes, centered on the Igoumenitsa region, but also in other cities in northern Greece, such as Ioannina, Thessaloniki and Kastoria, which keeps the competent services on heightened alert.
