Demographic collapse in Epirus during the first two months of 2026

Epirus is collapsing demographically, as the data for the first two months of 2026 are very worrying. So much so that they are truly frightening for the future.

In January and March 2026, there were 683 deaths and 292 births in the 17 municipalities of Epirus and the four prefectures. Only in the municipality of Ioannina is the balance different in these two months, but this is not enough to change the hopeless picture, a characteristic imprint of which is that in the municipality of Igoumenitsa, with 25,109 residents (EL.STAT. Census 2021), there was not a single birth in the first two months of 2026.

One might say that over the course of the months, births may increase, however, with mathematical precision, deaths will also increase much more.

The demographic nightmare is here. In the prefecture of Ioannina, 300 deaths and 260 births were recorded. Specifically, in the municipality of Ioannina, 196 deaths and 260 births, in the municipality of Dodoni, 21 deaths and no births, in the municipality of Konitsa, 18 deaths and no births, in the municipality of Pogoni, 16 deaths and no births, in the municipality of Zitsa, 31 deaths and no births, in the municipality of Voreia Tzoumerka, 9 deaths and no births, and in the municipality of Zagori, 9 deaths and no births.

In the prefecture of Thesprotia, 111 deaths and 2 births were recorded. Specifically, in the municipality of Igoumenitsa, 40 deaths and no births, in the municipality of Souli, 31 deaths and no births, and in the municipality of Filiates, 40 deaths and 2 births.

In the prefecture of Arta, 165 deaths and 27 births were recorded. Specifically, in the municipality of Arta, 80 deaths and 26 births were recorded, in the municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas 34 deaths and one birth, in the municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis 30 deaths and no births, and in the municipality of Kentrika Tzoumerka 21 deaths and no births.

In the prefecture of Preveza, 107 deaths and three births were recorded. Specifically, in the municipality of Preveza, 71 deaths and 2 births were recorded, and in the municipality of Parga, 36 deaths and one birth, while no data were announced for the municipality of Ziros.

Σ’ αυτό έρχεται να προστεθεί και το γεγονός ότι όλο και περισσότερες γυναίκες αναβάλλουν την μητρότητα, λόγω καριέρας ή ακόμη και εργασιακής ανασφάλειας.

Our autonomy from our destination, among other things, has the tragic consequence of demographics.

Family planning, as "progressive" sociologists understand it, leads us to aging. Our alignment with our values is a starting point for restoring life to its normal framework.

If we want to have a future, we must abandon wishful thinking and change our mindset. That is, to rediscover the ethos that suits us, because the way out of the demographic problem lies in our reconnecting with ethos and tradition.
