An awkward moment by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit went viral on social media within minutes, provoking humor and criticism.
In a released video, Rama is heard addressing French President Emmanuel Macron, asking him to apologize because he did not Congratulate albania and Azerbaijan on the “peace” they had signed. In fact, Rama looks directly at the camera recording the incident, as if he was aware that his words would cause a sensation.
Rama: "You must apologize!"
Macron: "Why?"
Rama: "Because you didn't congratulate us when we reached the peace agreement between the Two countries. And President trump worked hard for this agreement!"
Video from the Summit
Rama's attack directly refers to the successive blunders of US President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly confused Albania with Armenia, when he was talking about the end of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
However, the Albanian prime minister's "joke" was perceived by many as an inelegant diplomatic blunder, as he appeared to publicly mock an American president in the presence of foreign leaders - including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The Russian network did not leave the story unexploited either. Russia Today, who published it on his account on the platform X with the title:
"Albanian Prime Minister Jokes About Trump's Claim That He Ended the War Between Azerbaijan and Albania."
When he "joked" with Putin
This is not the first time that Edi Rama has used his humor in international forums. In Bled Strategic Forum 2023 in Slovenia, the Albanian Prime Minister took on the role of… a stand-up comedian, telling a joke who criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his involvement in the death of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Although the audience laughed, the other leaders on the panel seemed more taken aback by Rama's stance.
