November 24, 1912 – The liberation of Saranda by the Greek Army

On the 22ndor In November 1912, the Minister of the Navy of Greece, S. Stratos, ordered a reconnaissance patrol to be carried out in the Gulf of Vlora by ships sailing in the surrounding area.

Following his order, the three steamers "Penios", "Acheloos" and "Evrotas" proceeded to pick up the Greek letter. Then a small detachment consisting of 10 Greek men landed on the island of Sasson and informed the residents of the area that, if anything happened to these men, the city of Vlora would be bombed. This detachment remained on the island until the end of the war.

Also, Italy and Austria-Hungary were dissatisfied with the movements of the Greek Fleet in the Ionian Sea and reacted.

As a result of these reactions, the Greek Navy did not capture Vlora, but landed further south in the area of Saranda.

The city Of Saranda was liberated On November 24, 1912, by the 1st Infantry regiment led by colonel Mexas. The Entire effort was reinforced from the sea with their fire by the three steamships commanded by lieutenant Commander K. Georgantas.

Following this, the intention was for the 1st Regiment to move towards Delvino, to strike from the north the areas of Drisco, Bizani, Manoliassa, etc. However, some mistakes by the head of the entire mission did not allow the realization of this specific plan, and so Colonel Mexas was replaced.
