Greek diplomacy between formal visits and real opportunities

Ministry of Outrage

The role of our country's representation on the UN Security Council, which is already entering its second and final year, has probably been misunderstood. Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, for the third or fourth time this year, traveled to New York, on the occasion, of course, of our country's participation in the Security Council.

Usually, such an opportunity is important for each country, in order to present its positions to other foreign ministers or even to permanent representatives of other countries to the UN, especially if at that time the Security Council is dealing with issues that concern it. And in this way, our country can expand its contacts and channels of communication with countries that it will need in the future.

Once again, however, we saw the Foreign Minister go to New York for an entire week, where he made a ceremonial visit to the UN Secretary-General, gave a speech on the Middle East to the Security Council, which was probably the same as the one he had read at the two previous Security Council meetings, while he spoke at two events and returned to Greece.

There is still time until the end of 2026, when our country's term on the Security Council ends, to make serious moves and serious interventions that will help the country's foreign policy and show that we do not treat the Security Council as an annoying routine and obligation and, at the same time, an opportunity for a week away from the problems of Athens.

Papastavrou cleans Up

As for contacts with the American government, it is obvious that there is a problem there, since the best that Greek diplomats achieved was to secure a telephone conversation between the Foreign Minister from New York and his counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington. On the contrary, we often see Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou in the American capital, who now seems to be monopolizing relations with the Trump administration.
