A police officer serving in a Tirana department is under detention after a large sum of money was discovered in a vehicle that attempted to cross a border crossing from Serbia into Kosovo.
The inspection was not random. The car was selected for a detailed examination by customs officers, who during an X-ray scan detected alterations to the floor structure. The indications of hidden construction led to a further technical inspection, with the assistance of the Border Police and the use of special equipment for the inspection of internal cavities.
During the investigation, a carefully designed hiding place was discovered, inside which an undeclared amount of money was found, which, according to initial estimates by the authorities, amounts to approximately 1 million euros.
Kosovo authorities said it was a serious case of violation of customs legislation and immediately proceeded to arrest the driver. The origin and final destination of the money are being examined, while the results of the preliminary investigation are awaited, which will shed light on the scope of the case.
