Italian biology professor Michele D'Angelo, who was involved in the fatal car accident on August 8 in the city of Fieri, is now back in Italy. The Fieri Judicial Authority has decided to release him on bail of 15,000 euros, after approximately two and a half months in detention.
The decision was made two days ago and replaces the temporary detention with restrictive conditions. D'Angelo must appear on the last Friday of each month, at 2:00 PM, at the Fieri Police Department, while his case remains open.
After his release from prison, the 44-year-old professor returned to Italy yesterday accompanied by his partner. The couple arrived at Rome airport in the afternoon and then went to L'Aquila, where D'Angelo has been teaching at the university for years. According to Italian media, his return was organized in complete secrecy by the authorities of both countries.
«The nightmare is over, now we can breathe", said his partner, who closely followed the entire court process. As she said, Michele remains deeply shocked, but relieved to be back in his homeland.
D'Angelo was arrested on August 8 while on vacation in Albania. His car collided with a Mercedes on the Levan-Fieri road, seriously injuring a 17-year-old who died three days later in a Tirana hospital where he had been taken.
As the outcome of the case testifies, Italy's pressure for D'Angelo's release was met with a response from Albania's "independent" judiciary.
