Albanian authorities have confirmed that most of their nationals returned from Great Britain this year had been convicted of crimes there.

Every week, a small crowd gathers at the barbed wire fence at the back of Tirana Airport, Albania.

Deportation flights to Albania have increased since the country signed a joint cooperation agreement with the United Kingdom last December to "suppress and deter illegal immigration."

The UK government's Home Office says more than 1,000 people have since returned: around half of them voluntarily, the rest a mix of failed asylum seekers and foreign offenders.

Some had been offered money in exchange for agreeing to deportation and were released from prison before serving their minimum sentences under an existing system used for foreign offenders.
