The heart of Hellenism in Australia honored the National Day of March 25th with impressive festive events in the center of Sydney. A grand parade was held with thousands participating and the younger generation attending, which ended at the famous Sydney Opera House, where an event was held with Greek community dance groups.
Initially, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Redfern, by Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
This was followed by the laying of wreaths at the monument to the unknown soldier in the central square of Martin Place and from there a parade of Greek clubs and schools to the Sydney Opera House.
The capital of New South Wales and the landmark Sydney Opera House was flooded with Greek flags, traditional costumes, dances and music from every corner of Greece, Crete, Macedonia and Pontus.
According to the president of the Greek Community of New South Wales, Harry Danalis, the participation of the public exceeded any precedent, at least for the past decade.
The Greek state was represented at the anniversary events in Sydney by Deputy Minister of the Interior Theodoros Livanios, who pointed out that when Greeks are united, they can defeat empires.
