Την έντονη ανησυχία του για την κατάσταση που βιώνει η Ελληνική Μειονότητα της Αλβανίας εξέφρασε με επιστολή του στον αρμόδιο Επίτροπο για τη διεύρυνση της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, κ. Γιοχάνες Χαν, ο Πρόεδρος της Νέας Δημοκρατίας κ. Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης.

Επισήμανε μεταξύ άλλων ότι τα τελευταία χρόνια οι αλβανικές Αρχές έχουν επιδοθεί σε μια διαρκή προσπάθεια καταπάτησης περιουσιακών και άλλων δικαιωμάτων της Ελληνικής Μειονότητας στην Αλβανία. Προσπάθεια που κορυφώθηκε με τα χθεσινά γεγονότα στην Χειμάρρα, όπου, με την αδικαιολόγητη συνδρομή ισχυρής αστυνομικής δύναμης, επιχειρήθηκε η κατεδάφιση σπιτιών που ανήκουν σε μέλη της Ελληνικής Μειονότητας.

Σημείωσε ακόμη, ότι η Ελλάδα, όπως και τα υπόλοιπα κράτη - μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, συμφώνησε στην ενταξιακή πορεία της Αλβανίας, προκειμένου η γειτονική μας χώρα να προχωρήσει ταχύτερα στη υιοθέτηση δημοκρατικών και άλλων μεταρρυθμίσεων, στο σεβασμό στα ανθρώπινα και μειονοτικά δικαιώματα, όπως επίσης και στην καταπολέμηση της διαφθοράς και του οργανωμένου εγκλήματος. Δυστυχώς, όμως, όπως διαπιστώνεται και από τα τελευταία γεγονότα, οι προσδοκίες αυτές τίθενται όλο και συχνότερα εν αμφιβόλω.

Mr. Commissioner,

With this letter I wish to express my serious concern over the situation of the Greek Ethnic Minority in Albania.

As you well know, all EU Member-States, including Greece, agreed to accord EU candidate status to Albania and in such to provide a strong incentive and catalyst for the country to pursue significant democratic and other reforms, in line with its stated European vocation.

Unfortunately, expectations in this regard have not been met. Serious deficiencies persist in many areas, including the rule of law, combatting corruption and organized crime, as well as respect for human and minority rights, in particular regarding the rights of the Greek Ethnic Minority in Albania.

Over the past year, we have witnessed numerous attempts by Albanian Authorities to infringe on the property and other rights of the Greek Ethnic Minority. These efforts culminated in yesterday’s events in Himara, where local Authorities, escorted by a disproportionately large police presence, attempted to demolish buildings belonging to members of the Greek Ethnic Minority.

The stance of the Albanian Authorities in this regard is facilitated by the fact that the “minority zones” they have arbitrarily established by law exclude the Greek Ethnic Minority of Himara and other regions, despite the fact that it constitutes a significant percentage of the population in these areas.

It is a source of further concern that this counter-productive stance is often accompanied by nationalistic rhetoric on the part of the Albanian Government, which affects our bilateral relations between Greece and Albania.

Allow me to express my expectation that these serious concerns will be duly taken into consideration when evaluating Albania’s path towards accession to the EU.
