The Albanian press is provocative once again. The most recent event has to do with the death of the famous Irene Papa. In dozens of articles from Albanian news sites, Irene Papa is referred to as an artist of Albanian origin.
The great actress had taken part in more than 80 films shot all over the world.
A simple, Doric figure, a symbol of Greek beauty, a famous representative of Mediterranean culture abroad, a charismatic and dynamic woman, Irene Papa became internationally known for her acting skills and spirit. In her career, she took on important female roles in theater and cinema, fully embodying the power of ancient tragedy.
Η Ειρήνη Παπά (το πραγματικό όνομα της οποίας ήταν Ειρήνη Λελέκου), γεννήθηκε στις 3 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1926 στο Χιλιομόδι Κορινθίας, όπου πέρασε τα παιδικά της χρόνια. Οι γονείς της ήταν δάσκαλοι και είχε τρεις αδελφές. Η εφηβεία της, τη βρίσκει στην Αθήνα να παρακολουθεί μαθήματα υποκριτικής στην Εθνική Σχολή Κλασσικού Θεάτρου. Στα 15 της έχει ήδη πάρει τον καλλιτεχνικό της δρόμο, αφού εργαζόταν σαν ραδιοφωνική παραγωγός, τραγουδίστρια και χορεύτρια. Σε ηλικία 18 χρόνων παντρεύεται τον συγγραφέα ‘Αλκη Παπά, και παρόλο που ο γάμος τους δεν κράτησε πολύ, η ηθοποιός διατήρησε το επίθετο με το οποίο έγινε παγκοσμίως γνωστή.
The Albanian press, however, seems to be exploiting and trampling on the memory of the great artist by claiming that she is from Albania. According to them, "her father was an Albanian from Epirus, from whom she also took the surname Lelekou."
