Former Prime Minister of Albania and founder of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, has been hospitalized for 17 days in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Tirana in serious condition, after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.
According to current information, his health condition remains consistently critical as it shows neither improvement nor further deterioration.
The 73-year-old Nano was the first president of the Socialist Party and is considered the man who transformed the former Labor Party (Enver Hoxha's party), with a legacy from the communist past, into a political force that withstands multi-partyism, making it an important factor in Albania's political scene.
Nano served as the chairman of the Socialist Party from 12 June 1991 until 2005, when he retired from active politics. A subsequent bid for the position of President of the Republic was not supported by the Socialist Party, then led by Edi Rama. During his political career, since 1991, he has served four times as the country's Prime Minister.
