The memory of the Bishop of Dryinoupolis, Saint Sofianos, was celebrated in a solemn manner in the Metropolis of Gjirokastër.
Metropolitan Nathanael of Gjirokaster celebrated a divine service at the “Anastasi” Cathedral of Gjirokaster, flanked by priests of the Metropolis.
It should be noted that Saint Sofianos was a figure with ecclesiastical and national action, in a very difficult period, in the mid-17th century and early 18th century, of the Turkish occupation, where Islamization threatened Orthodoxy and the Nation!
In fact, he went from village to village to strengthen the slaves in their faith and convey to them the message of freedom, both spiritual and national.
And he dedicated himself to this purpose that he considered sacred, resigning in 1711, shortly before his death, from his duties and returning to the ranks of the monks.
His center of activity was the Monastery of Saint Athanasius in Polytsiani, Gjirokaster, which now bears his name, and where he was buried.
His words are still guiding today. More than ever. Let us not let despair enter us. Modern man is a witness and spectator of the collapse of values and principles, on which the edifice of true life is founded.
If we consider God our ally, we should not be Shaken. of course, we should do what depends on us and fight with strength. Beyond that, let us base our hopes on God. And let us be sure that these hopes will never be disappointed.
