The church of Panagia in Vrahogorantzi, Dropoli, is returning to the spotlight as one of the most remarkable monuments of the region's ecclesiastical heritage. Despite its small size, it contains elements of architectural and artistic interest that make it a special case in the wider area of Epirus.
The building belongs to the domed basilica type and has dimensions of approximately 7.50 by 6.80 meters. The original church consisted of the main space and the sanctuary, while a narthex was later added to the western side. Inside, six stone columns survive, joined with plaster and topped with simple capitals. The arches that develop above them separate the space into three aisles, while the drum that supports the dome is raised through a system of arches.
The stonework is meticulous, with large stones reinforcing the corners of the walls. Above the western entrance, decorative elements that refer to more ancient artistic influences are preserved, giving the monument a timeless character.
Particular importance is given to the frescoes that adorn the interior. According to reports, the church contains works by two important figures of post-Byzantine painting, a fact that reinforces its importance as an artistic center of the era.
Albania's Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, described the church as a rare cultural heritage item, noting that it is a monument of particular historical and artistic importance.
