Serious incidents in Tirana against the backdrop of government corruption

Political tension in Albania is entering a new phase of escalation, with the center of Tirana turning into a scene of serious incidents and the government under suffocating pressure. Protesters attacked a government complex that houses the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama with improvised firebombs, demanding the immediate resignation of the government.

The outburst of public anger is directly linked to the judicial developments surrounding a high-ranking government official, who is in the sights of the Special Prosecutor's Office for serious corruption cases. The charges concern, among other things, the management of public funds and the favorable treatment of specific companies in large-scale infrastructure projects.

Prosecutors have already initiated proceedings to lift the parliamentary immunity of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, paving the way for her arrest. The final decision lies with parliament, where the ruling party maintains a majority, but it is not yet clear when the issue will be put to a vote.

During the events, strong police forces were deployed around government buildings, mainly in a defensive stance, without attempting to immediately disperse the crowd. The demonstrators, visibly angry, denounced widespread waste of public money and impunity for politicians.

The minister herself, in a recent statement to parliament, dismissed the accusations as slanderous and politically motivated, stating that she would fully cooperate with the judiciary. However, social tension seems to exceed the level of institutional assurances.

The management of projects worth hundreds of millions of euros, such as roads, bridges and tunnels, has turned into a field of open conflict between the government, the judiciary and society, with developments portending prolonged political instability and a difficult period ahead for Tirana.
