Pafos FC made Champions League history with an epic win over Red Star Belgrade. In the second leg in Cyprus, the Serbs took the lead in the 60th minute through Ivanić and it looked like the match would go to extra time, after Pafos had won 2-1 in Belgrade. However, in the 89th minute, Brazilian Zaza scored a goal of unparalleled inspiration, tying the score at 1-1 and giving the Greek team a place in the League Phase of the top European competition. A goal that will not only be remembered for its beauty, but also for its historical significance.

The success of Pafos FC in European stadiums has caught the attention of the entire football community. Many fans in Cyprus and Europe, seeing the team badge with the face of Evagoras Pallikaridis, will wonder who the young hero who adorns the emblem is. Those who did not know his story will now have the opportunity to learn about his life, sacrifice and courage, while Pafos FC thus becomes a living link between football and the History of Cyprus.

From the bottom to the elite of Europe

Pafos was only founded in 2014, from the merger of AEK Kouklia and AEP Pafos. In less than a decade, the team has gone from the second division of Cyprus to participating in the Champions League group stages, proving that nothing is impossible. Today, it is considered the most promising force in Cypriot football.

But beyond the successes on the pitch, Pafos carries a strong historical reference in its emblem. At the center of the emblem is the face of Evagoras Pallikaridis, a young Paphos native who sacrificed his life in the fight for Cyprus' freedom from British rule.

Pallikaridis was born in 1938 in Tsada, Paphos, and while still a student, he stood out for his courage. In 1953, at the age of just 15, he took down the English flag from Paphos College, sparking a wave of protests. Two years later, he joined EOKA, actively participating in the struggle against colonialism.

He was arrested in 1956 while carrying weapons and sentenced to death. Despite his young age, he faced the court with dignity, declaring: "I know you will hang me. Whatever I did, I did as a Greek Cypriot seeking his Freedom."

On March 14, 1957, he was led to the gallows singing the National Anthem. His sacrifice made him an eternal symbol of self-sacrifice and freedom.

The team that connects past and present

With Pallikaridis' face on the emblem, Pafos represents not only a city, but also a deep historical memory. Its football successes are accompanied by the message that sport can keep History alive, while at the same time inspiring future generations.

The feat of qualifying for The Champions league and the emblem with Evagoras Pallikaridis remind everyone that football is not only about goals and titles, but also about symbols that convey timeless messages of freedom and pride.
