The chieftain from Himara, Crocodile Branches, and his actions

On this day In 1479: Krokondeilos Kladas abandoned koroni At the Head of 16,000 men and marched Towards mani, where he declared his decision to continue the war and called The greeks to arms by raising his banner.

Kladas, commander of Mani – His struggles against the Ottomans – His flight to the West – His action in Northern Epirus – The end of the heroic revolutionary

In today's article, we will deal with a heroic chieftain, leader Of the first revolutionary movement Against The ottomans After the Fall Of constantinople (1453), crocodile or crocodile branches.

The rebel with the strange name!

Crocodile Branch Was born in 1425. He came from Himara (<arch. Chimera) (and Chimarra <stream) of Northern Epirus. His father, like others from the neighboring areas of Himara, settled in the Peloponnese and entered the service of the Palaiologoi.

There is a lot of interesting information about the name of Crocodile Kladas in the “Historical Dictionary of Greek Surnames” by the late Dikaios Vagiakakos (1917-2016). His surname comes from the ancient Greek word κλάδος = branch, twig (the word with this meaning already exists in Herodotus). The metaphorical meaning of the word, an autonomous part of a broader whole, is found in Empedocles.

It is worth mentioning that Dikaios Vagiakakos, a Maniatian by origin, makes special mention of Crocodile Kladas, with a brief biography of him, something rather rare for the “Historical Dictionary of Greek Surnames”.

We should also note that the name occurs in various sources with the forms Korkontylos, Korkodeilos and Acrokondylos. We note here, without necessarily relating this to Kladas, that the word kondylos in ancient Greek but also later, in the epic of Digenis Akritas, also had the meaning of “fissure”.

The life and work of Crocodile Kladas

During the period 1458-1460, when the Ottoman invasion of the Peloponnese began, Kladas fought heroically on the side of the Palaiologos, but was eventually forced to submit to Sultan Mehmed II (the Conqueror), receiving from him in exchange tracts of land in Laconia (Elos plain) and Messinia.

The Byzantine chronicler George Sfranzis writes characteristically:…seeing these (i.e. the conquests of Muhammad) Krokontylos, or rather, Krokodilos (Kladas), more familiarly, he too bowed down to the amir (amiras = title given to Muslim rulers and chieftains), and he gave him the castle of Saint George and his two sons…>>

William Miller, in his work “The Frankish Rule in Greece”, writes: “Kladas was one of the last Peloponnesian warriors who had submitted to Muhammad II at the time of the conquest and whom the conqueror, considering him wise, had granted the rich plain of Elos, near Sparta, as a military timarium. Elos, according to one theory, gave the Helots their name in ancient times, but Kladas had a more Spartan than Helot character.”

During the First Turkish-Venetian War (1463-1479) and with the arrival of the Venetian warlord Bertoldo d' Este, who was commander-in-chief of the Venetian military operations in Greek territory, Kladas entered as the leader of <<soldiers>> (stradioti) under the protection of the Venetian flag, rousing those <<Greeks of the unruly Mani who had submitted to the conqueror>> (Alexis G. K. Savvidis, "The Balkan Reaction")

The Venetians, thanks to his great influence and value, appointed him leader of The greek Armatoles (beis in cernide, che in lingua nostra e ditto capo di stratiotti) and it seems that he managed to recapture the Ancestral Timari in vordonia. despite these successes Of kladas and The venetians, The ottomans In 1474-1475 occupied most of the Peloponnese except for some fortresses.

kladas

For these services, Kladas was honored by the provident (proveditore) of the Venetian fleet, Ieronymos Contarini, with the decoration of the Lion of Saint Mark and a gold-embroidered mantle (September 1479), while he was granted new land holdings in Koroni.

However, after the Ottomans abandoned the siege of Nafpaktos, the Venetian-Turkish war ended and the Venetians signed a peace treaty with not particularly favorable terms for themselves. By this treaty, they were forced to cede the regions of Mani to Mehmed II and at the same time pressured Kladas to resign (1479/1480). Kladas, angered by the Venetians’ attitude, left Koroni and went to Mani (9 October 1480) at the head of a corps of “stradioti”.

According to Konstantinos Sathas, “he gathered 16,000 thieves and other rebels, went to Mesa Mani and called them all to a revolution” (K. Sathas, Turkish-Occupied Greece 1914). The information cited by K. Sathas (1842-1914) was received from K. Kladas’ descendant Ioannis Georgios Kladas who lived in Kefalonia and who had copied it from a manuscript preserved in the British Museum: “Storia della Guerra dei Veneziani 1478-1482. Ms. Mus. Britan Additional no. 8586”

It should be noted that the first edition of K. Satha's book was published in 1869 when the great historian was only 27 years old(!!!)

When they learned of the developments, the commander of the garrison of Koroni, Nicolo Novager, and the commissioner, Nicolo Contarini, were alarmed and immediately arrested Kladas' wife, children, and two brothers who were in Koroni.

In an article by Th. Katrivanos in the “Journal of the Leontarites Association of Arcadia”, vol. 6, July – September 1981, we read: “Korkodeilos Kladas is mentioned in the Venetian archives as CAPO DI STRADIOTI, i.e. the leader of the soldiers… Kladas… confined the Turks to the fortresses of Leontario, Androsas, Karytaini and Mystras.

Kladas, with the castles of Kastania and Helmos as its base, above what is now Skortsinos, cuts off communication between Laconia and the rest of the Peloponnese.

The Venetians, who had characterized Kladas as “hominis perfidissimi et scandalossimi ac perturbatoris in Brachio Mane” (“a most perfidious and scandalous man, as well as a disruptor of the Arm of Mani”), awarded him, dead or alive, by decision of the Council of the Most Serene and with votes of 79 to 57, with a reward of 10,000 hyperpyri (gold Byzantine coins).

The Venetians treated Kladas in this despicable manner, violating all agreements between them and audaciously presenting the excuse that the lands of Mani, before the war with the Ottoman Empire (1463 – 1479), were not Venetian, but Byzantine territory and since Byzantium had become Ottoman territory, these lands, namely Mani, should rightfully be returned to their legitimate overlord, namely the Ottomans!

Kladas Did not accept any agreement whatsoever.

Mehmed II decided to send strong troops against him. Thus, the Sanjakbey of Rumelia, Ali Bumito (Bumiko), invaded Mani in early 1481.

However, they suffered a crushing defeat by Kladas' forces at the closed passes (kleisoures) of the Oitylus mountain range. Seven hundred of their men were killed and the Ottoman forces retreated to Sparta on 19 January 1481.

stratioti

In early April 1481, Kladas found himself in a very difficult position. In addition to the Ottomans on land, who had been reinforced by 2,000 Azapids and 1,000 Arkasides, he also had to face their fleet approaching the port of Vasilopotamos from Chalkis.

However, on the night of April 6, 1481, three galleys belonging to Ferdinand II, King of Naples, Sicily and Aragon, were found at the Cape of Saint Angelo in Mani, bound for Rhodes and the Hellespont to find out if Mehmed II was preparing to campaign against the Italian city.

The Branch in Epirus

In Naples, Kladas was welcomed with honors by King Ferdinand, who was a great admirer of his.

At the same time, an Embassy of Epirus was in neapolis to Urge ioannis, son Of Georgios kastriotis, to help his homeland.

John Served with other nobles in the camp of the duke of Calabria.

Ferdinand decided to send Kladas along with Kastriotis to the opposite mainland coasts.

Kastriotis landed in the area around Dyrrachium. The inhabitants welcomed him with great enthusiasm as a ruler. However, the Ottomans moved against him with large forces.

Kladas and Kastriotis returned to Neapolis.

With their valuable help, the Duke of Calabria recaptured Otranto (the ancient Hydra) from the Ottomans. It should be noted that the Ottomans had captured Otranto after a short siege on August 11, 1480. 12,000 inhabitants of the city and surrounding areas were killed and another 5,000 were captured. Bishop Stefano Pentinelli and the commander of the city's garrison, Count Francesco Zurlo, were sawn (!) alive.

In the end, 813 men remained. The Ottoman leader, Gedik Ahmed Pasha, led them to the Hill of Minerva, where he gave them the choice of converting to Islam or being killed.

The brave Christians, led by Antonio Primaldo, replied that they would rather die than deny their faith. Then the ruthless Gedik Ahmet Pasha ordered them all to be beheaded on the spot. These 813 martyrs of the Christian faith were canonized by Pope Francis I on May 12, 2013. The Vatican had already "blessed" them since 1771.

Then, Kladas and Kastriotis, with 4 of Ferdinand's galleys, landed in Epirus, destroying everything Turkish they found on their way. Thus they reached Avlona and then the mountains of Himara. As soon as they appeared in the area, the Christian inhabitants of 50 villages took up arms and expelled the Turks.

Then they attacked the fortress of the same name in Himara with their galleys: “castello chiamato Cimera, principal fortezza di duella privincia” (“castle called Cimera, a fortress of primary importance for the surrounding area”). Three thousand Ottomans rushed to the aid of the subasi (commander) of the fortress. However, the inhabitants and the hoplites from the galleys surrounded them. They killed and captured about 1,000. The rest fled in terror.

The Ottoman subaltern arrived In Corfu By boat on august 31, 1481. Kladas Immediately Captured the fortress, as well as the fortress of papalos, In the name of king Ferdinand.

The heroic end of Kladas

This was a well-known ottoman practice, As each sultan would Receive as proof of the successes of the various pashas, loads of pickled ears of their victims...

Epilogue

Korkodeilos Kladas is undoubtedly a heroic figure who acted in the difficult years after the fall of Constantinople. The situation at that time was completely confused. As Th. Katrivanos writes in the “Leontarios’ Journal”, Turkish spahids, Orthodox Christians in religion, fought on the side of the Ottomans with the flag of Saint George against the Greeks. The unquenchable religious hatred between the unifiers and the unifiers existed everywhere.

On the other hand, the Venetians, however, very aptly writes W. Miller: "... discovered since then that an active leader of irregulars, although useful in times of war, becomes dangerous in times of peace."

"His (Kladas) heroism, his cheerfulness, his continuous revolutionary action make him without a doubt one of the pioneering figures of the Struggle, without this, however, implying a conscious national liberation effort" (WORLD BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY, ATHENS PUBLISHING).

However, many, especially younger, historians consider him an early hero of the Greek national liberation struggle and a role model for many armatolos and heroes of 1821.

P.S. I warmly thank the leading Greek linguist Mr. Christoforos Charalampakis for his valuable suggestions on the subject of the etymology of the name Korkodeilos Kladas.
