Himara in 1675 through the eyes of French physician and archaeologist Jacob Spohn

THE Jacob Spohn (Jacob Spon) (1647-1685) was A french physician and pioneering archaeologist and one of the first to study greek archaeological monuments.

According to a relevant reference in his travelogue on the coast of Himara in 1675, Greece begins from Himara.

His interesting report follows, accompanied by photographic footage of the Drymadas of Himara, taken in 1940 by the Italian Giuseppe Massani.

"Near Sassona we could see the Akrokeraunia Mountains which are today called the mountains of Chimera (Chimara). Along the outer coast, they are inhabited by five or six villages which resist the Turks and refuse to pay the haratsi, the main tax.

The chief of these villages is Himara, situated on a rocky promontory, to which the whole population can retreat in case of emergency. Furthermore, if anyone wished to attack them from the sea, they could retreat to their mountains which are practically inaccessible and could take their flocks with them. If they were to attack by land, there are passes which are so narrow that they could drive off an army by pelting it with stones.

They make good soldiers and follow the Greek faith, and like the Maniates, they are very good at plundering. They come from the Macedonians, as the Maniates come from the Lacedaemonians, two equally warlike peoples. They have a good harbor called Panormos but few ships dare to stop there, because it is said that they sell Muslims to Christians and Christians to Muslims.

Regarding their religion, they are citizens of the Metropolis of Ioannina, which is a large city two days away.

From here we began to enter Greece, which gave us so much pleasure that it had once given Aeneas pain when he passed through this region, as he considered the Greeks the destroyers of his country."

  • Σοβαρά τώρα; Ένας Γάλλος μας έμαθε που ξεκινάει η Ελλάδα. Μάστορας! Άρα οι άλλοι τι κάνανε;

  • Pote den xekina Ellada apo Himara. H Himara einai ALVANIA. Ti lete re? Min grafete tetoia.
