The century-old olive tree “Evdokia” in Corfu: 1086 years of history

In Corfu stands proud "Eudokia", An olive tree 1086 To 1200 Years old, perhaps the third oldest tree in Greece.

German scientists from the Dresden University of Technology dated the tree, perhaps revealing its establishment around 928 AD, before the conquest of the island by Saracens, Normans and Venetians.

“Eudokia” is close to 1200 years old, according to the founder of the Hellenic Union of the Ionian Islands, who highlighted the fruitless efforts to attract interest from academic and government bodies in Athens. The Union of the Ionian Islands is focusing on promoting “Eudokia”, along with 2 other century-old olive trees in Corfu, as alternative tourist destinations.

“Evdokia” reaches the top 10 largest and oldest olive trees in Europe, already attracting the interest of schools and tourists.

Although “Eudokia” holds a prominent place in history, Crete is home to the oldest olive tree in Greece, perhaps in the world, in the village of Ano Vouves, Kissamos, at 3000 years old. Its trunk, with a circumference of 12.5 meters, bears the marks of a history full of fruit and olive oil.

The tsounatis variety, grafted onto a wild olive tree, created a work of art that was declared a Natural Monument in 1990.

Despite the now hollow shape of the trunk, the olive tree continues to bear fruit, offering the “best olive oil in the world.” A symbol of immortality, the Vouvon olive tree recalls the fire that destroyed a 2500-year-old olive tree in Evia, emphasizing the value of preserving our natural heritage.
