The Greek army in Drymades in March 1913

gm087.jpg

Days that are, and especially in Epirus, historical memory returns to that period of 1913 when the Greek Army liberated Ioannina and the entire martyred mainland from the Ottoman yoke. Within the framework of the common front of the Balkan allies, the offensive was unstoppable and the pursuit of the Ottoman occupation troops continued successfully to the places that are today in Albanian territory.

Successful reporting is considered to be that which most faithfully conveys the feelings of society, of ordinary people. Therefore, diaries of ordinary rural residents acquire great importance in the overview of historical events.

Below we publish some notes that the author of the book “Drymades – Chimarras”, Kostas N. Dedes, has included on pages 59-60. This is the Diary of K. Boutsios, a resident of Drymades, who in a very spontaneous but quite descriptive way has noted the enthusiastic situation in his village, in the days of spring 1913, when the Greek Army arrived there.

It is truly an enjoyable report...

"e) Scattered childhood memories from the manuscripts of K. Boutsios.

-I remember the hero chieftain Georgios Tsolakis. He would come to the School and caress us and call us “my chickens…”, in the Cretan dialect. One day he went with his men to a service at Agios Theodoros and they all partook. Within a week he was killed fighting standing up.

-The Telegraph Office was located in the School. The operators were our compatriots Leonidas Zis and Xenophon Zouppas. Then they told us about the arrest of Uncle Giannis Papas. The deceased had a quirk or rather a mania: Every noon and exactly at 12 o'clock he would fire a rifle. He had been warned to stop this habit, because the situation did not allow it. Giannis ignored it. They put him in the Moros for 3-4 hours as punishment and of course he got smart, because he was infested with fleas.

Unforgettable moments. After a few days, the dance was held again. Captain Kotoulas (later General) was present. He was so excited by the genuine Greek feast of the Drymadi people that he asked for a chair and sat in the middle of the dance to enjoy the levity and festive grace of the Chimarriots. It wasn't long before, tearful from deep emotion, he climbed onto the chair and spoke with patriotic fervor to the people, who enthusiastically applauded the brilliant Greek officer.

-When the conscription took place, several people from our village went to Gjirokastra. Among them was Foto Mallios. One day he asked to be presented to his Captain. He was accepted and after greeting his officer, he said to him:

-Mr. Captain, may the evil take you. Let me go and see my wife (the unfortunate man is newlywed), and I give you my word that I will see her tomorrow. The Captain, moved, gave him permission. And the atheist managed to reach the village on foot in a day, from Argirokastro, and return true to his word.

-A number of people had been enlisted in the Gendarmerie department. Among them were: Pavlos Vrettos (Sergeant), Pilios Koumis, Thanasis Giannis Vrettos, Vasilis G. Gikopoulos, Foto Maroulis, etc."...
