Ο Έλληνας Πρωθυπουργός και Υπουργός των Στρατιωτικών Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος στις 22 Φεβρουαρίου 1913, αμέσως μετά την απελευθέρωση των Ιωαννίνων, ενημέρωσε τον Αρχιστράτηγο Διάδοχο Κωνσταντίνο ότι υπέρτατο πολιτικό συμφέρον καθιστούσε αναγκαία τη συνέχιση της προελάσεως, με μέρος των δυνάμεων, για την απελευθέρωση και της υπόλοιπης Ηπείρου, μέχρι των οριστικών ορίων των εθνικών διεκδικήσεων, ενώ ο όγκος του Στρατού θα συγκεντρωνόταν στη Θεσσαλονίκη για την αντιμετώπιση της απειλής που είχε δημιουργηθεί από τις επεκτατικές βλέψεις των Βουλγάρων.

In the early morning hours of March 1, 1913, the 8th Division moved north, via Kalpaki, to make contact with the Turkish forces, which, according to information from the 1st Cavalry Regiment, had occupied positions in the Ktismata – Kakavia area.
A detachment of the Division (15th Infantry Regiment – two batteries), covering its right flank, at 6 p.m. on March 2 attacked Turkish forces in the Chrysodouli area, which after the first shots were fired, retreated towards the Drinos valley. The main column of the Division reached the village of Ktismata.
The next day, March 3, 1913, the 8th Division, after deploying a battalion of Evzones in the direction of Delvino, continued the advance towards Gjirokastra. At 11:30 in the morning, the 1st Cavalry Regiment, which covered the movement of the Division, entered Gjirokastra, where the Greek residents of the city gave it an enthusiastic welcome. On the same day, at 3 p.m., the Evzone Battalion also entered Delvino.
The total number of captured Turkish prisoners in the area reached approximately 1,500 men. The bulk of the Turkish Army, estimated at 8,000 men, continued its retreat towards Tepelen.
