"Albanians should be banned from seeking asylum in Great Britain as they come from a 'demonstrably safe' country," said the Immigration Minister in Great Britain.

Robert Jenrick said such people should be “barred from the right to claim asylum”, as he warned that current levels of immigration to the UK are “unsustainable”.

His comments came after the Home Office declined to comment on a report in The Sunday Times that ministers were drafting legislation that could prevent asylum seekers who enter illegally from settling in the UK.

Home Secretary Suela Braverman was reported to have urged Rishi Sunak to back plans to detain illegal immigrants on arrival.

The government is under intense pressure from Conservative MPs to tackle smugglers who use small boats to transport migrants across the English Channel.

Albanians made up more than a third of the 33,000 migrants who crossed the Channel in the first nine months of this year and Mr Jenrick said they were now the “number one priority”.

"Albania is a seemingly safe country. It is very difficult to see how an Albanian would be able to successfully claim asylum here in the UK," he told the GB News.
