In addition to the historic church of All Saints built by Saint Patrocosmas the Aetolian, and among the countless other churches and chapels throughout Northern Epirus that contributed to the eternal effort of the people of Himarra to protect their faith and identity, there is also the church of Agia Marina in the center of Himarra, in Spilia. And today it celebrates!

It may be a small church, but every year it always manages to gather thousands of Chimarriots for the big celebrations and somehow reunite us under the sacred roof of the Saint. These are the moments when we meet again and mingle with relatives and friends and greet each other, embrace each other. We know that we will meet again next time there and this small church gives us this opportunity.

Ο πατήρ Σωτήριος από την Πάτρα από τα πρώτα χρόνια μετά την πτώση του καθεστώτος έδωσε τη δυνατότητα στους Χειμαρριώτες μετά από δεκαετίες συσκοτισμού να παρακολουθούν Θεία Λειτουργία και να γιορτάζουν, όπως ο υπόλοιπος Ορθόδοξος Ελληνισμός τα Χριστούγεννα και το Πάσχα. Κάθε χρόνο, εκεί στην Αγία Μαρίνα ξέραμε από μικρά παιδιά ότι μόλις θα έφτανε το Σάββατο του Λαζάρου θα ερχόταν, ακούραστος και θα έδινε την ευλογία του στο λαό της Χειμάρρας και στα γύρω χωριά επίσης, κάνοντας όσα περνούσαν από το χέρι του να μεταδώσει τη χριστιανική πίστη και το ορθόδοξο φως όλη τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. Πάντα θα μας έφερνε και λαμπάδες και μας τις έδινε μετά τα 12 Ευαγγέλια τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη. Μας έβαζε σε πείσμα για να νηστέψουμε, κήρυττε γεμάτος δύναμη και πυγμή ατελείωτες ώρες για να δυναμώσει την πίστη όχι μόνο των παιδιών, αλλά και των μεγάλων. Όλα αυτά στην Αγία Μαρίνα. Εκεί στην αυλή παίζαμε και με όλους τους ακολούθους του πατήρ Σωτηρίου, ανάμεσά τους και ο Κυριάκος και ο Λουκάς, που πλέον είναι οι δικοί μας ιερείς ο πατήρ Σιλουανός και ο πατήρ Λουκάς και η καμπάνα τώρα πια δεν ηχεί μονάχα το Πάσχα και τα Χριστούγεννα αλλά κάθε Κυριακή. Από εκεί ξεκίνησαν όλα, από την Αγία Μαρίνα. Εκεί που τώρα βρίσκεται και η κυρία Ιωάννα και προσφέρει από τα βάθη της ψυχής της στην ενορία της Χειμάρρας.

Where next to the yard, in the little house, the teacher Stella, Stella Pano, taught us our first Greek letters. That was where our first kindergarten was. From there, we started the generation that reopened the Greek school “Omiros”. All of this would have been impossible of course without the blessing and struggle of our Archbishop Anastasios.

So somehow this church has given a lot and continues to do so to rebuild what was demolished by a dictatorship and has managed to revive the religious worship of the people of Himara that they had been trying to protect for years. So, Agia Marina is a special part of the memories of the children of Himara and continues to build the modern religious history of the city. Today she also celebrates her Birthday!
