By the end of the month, the vehicle registration fee notices for 2013 will be "uploaded" to taxisnet. This is yet another tax bill that taxpayers are required to pay along with the income tax and property tax installments.
Starting this year, the method of paying traffic fees will change radically as the obligation to purchase the relevant license plate will be abolished. The fees will be paid like any other tax debt and the only proof of payment will be the receipt of their payment at the bank, at the Greek Post Office, or at the tax office (as long as there are still cash desks at the tax offices).
Specifically, based on the plan of the General Secretariat for Information Systems, which will be formally implemented in the last days of October:
– the notices for the payment of traffic fees will be “uploaded” to taxisnet and specifically to the electronic payment notification service. For those who are certified in taxisnet, the electronic notice is the only way to be informed about the traffic fee corresponding to their vehicle.
– for those who have not been certified in taxisnet, the notification will be printed by the GSPS and sent to them by post.
– both of the above categories of vehicle owners will have to visit a bank branch to pay the fee, while payment will also be possible via the internet for those who have access to web banking services.
– the fee will be confirmed in the name of each vehicle owner, as it appears in the taxisnet vehicle file, and if it is not paid by December 31, it will be confirmed at double the amount.
– in a second phase, there will be an electronic interface between police patrol cars and taxisnet in order to enable on-the-road checks to determine whether the toll has been paid or not. If a roadside check determines that the toll has not been paid, the vehicle's license plates and registration will be removed on the spot.
The change in the method of paying traffic fees is being made in order to save approximately 80 million euros. This is the cost of printing and mailing notices and producing the well-known signs.
It should be noted that the 2013 road taxes are as follows:
from 51 cc to 300 cc | 22 € |
from 301 cc to 785 cc | 55 € |
from 786 cc to 1071 cc | 120 € |
