Three important archaeological sites in the Drino Valley in Gjirokastër, the ancient Greek city of Antigoneia, the Roman theater of the Sophratikas in Adrianople in the center of Dropoli, and the castle of Paleokastro have been included in the recent archaeological excavations taking place in the Drino River Valley.

New findings shed light on several historical periods, transforming the historic valley into an even more significant place, as well as an important tourist destination.

This complex archaeological mission to the three above-mentioned sites crossed by the Drina River is included in the excavation and research of Albanian and Italian archaeologists (professors and students).

In detail, the simultaneous excavation brings to the surface both ancient Greek and early Christian tombs, Christian churches, and buildings that have been buried in various materials over the centuries.

A few days ago, in the village of Paleokastro and its eponymous castle, a few kilometers away from the city of Gjirokastra, a tomb from the early Byzantine period was discovered, which according to experts dates back to the 5th-6th century AD, a time when Emperor Justinian was renovating the regions of Epirus.

Italian archaeologist Roberto Perna associates the tomb with a Christian church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian that was located in the area.

At the same time, in Edirne, archaeologists referred to new special analyses of the soil, emphasizing that the ancient amphitheater of Edirne constitutes a minimal part of a fairly large residential complex.

In the northern part of the Valley lies the ancient Greek city of Antigoneia, founded by Pyrrhus of Epirus in honor of his second wife Antigone. Currently, archaeologists from the University of Mancerata in Italy, in collaboration with the Albanian Archaeological Institute, hope to discover the buried and, as they claim, well-preserved ancient Greek theater of the city that was buried under the ruins when it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 BC.
