350 kilos of cannabis seized in Kakavia before crossing into Greece

Albanian authorities dealt a significant blow to an attempted drug trafficking operation to Greece at the Kakavia border crossing, where a large quantity of cannabis was discovered carefully hidden in a truck bound for Greece.

The case was revealed following targeted checks carried out at the exit from the country, as part of increased surveillance measures. Police officers from the Border Directorate, in cooperation with customs services and the Drug Enforcement Department of the Gjirokaster Police Directorate, subjected a truck driven by a 33-year-old man from Tirana to a thorough inspection.

During the scanning process and the second-line inspection, the authorities found that a special cache had been formed on the floor of the vehicle. Inside, dozens of packages with suspicious plant substances were found. The count revealed 166 packages, which contained a total of approximately 350 kilograms of cannabis.

The driver was arrested on the spot and taken to the competent authorities, while both the drugs and the truck were seized as evidence. A case is being filed for the offense of drug trafficking.

Investigations are continuing under the supervision of the Gjirokaster Prosecutor's Office, with the aim of establishing whether an organized crime ring is behind the case and identifying any accomplices. The case details will be forwarded to the competent Court of First Instance for further legal action.
