After the last assassination attempt on the Pope, in February of this year, the Athens Security Directorate conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of seven Greek and Albanian thugs. Among the charges brought against them was that of attempted murder of the Pope. What is stated in the court documents that "K" brings to light constitute the anatomy of a paid death contract.

At 8 p.m. on February 26, the 34-year-old was walking at the intersection of Michael Voda and Agorakritou Streets when the passengers of a taxi opened fire on him. One of the bullets caused a penetrating wound to his shin, while a second bullet grazed his right shoulder. The two perpetrators initially fled in the taxi and then ran in different directions, each leaving two pistols and other items inside the taxi.

Στη διάρκεια στάσης σε περίπτερο επιβιβάστηκε στο ταξί και τρίτο άτομο, που παρέδωσε τα δύο όπλα στους επιβάτες στο πίσω κάθισμα. Κατέβηκε από το ταξί πέντε λεπτά αργότερα.

Στην κατάθεσή του, που φέρνει στο φως της δημοσιότητας η «Κ», ο οδηγός του ταξί ανέφερε: «Κατευθυνθήκαμε στην οδό Πιπίνου κάνοντας συνεχώς κυκλικό δρομολόγιο πέριξ του σημείου όπου μετέπειτα έπεσαν οι πυροβολισμοί. Ξαφνικά μου φώναξαν “σταμάτα, σταμάτα” και αφού άνοιξαν το παράθυρο που βρίσκεται πίσω από τη θέση του οδηγού, άρχισαν να πυροβολούν και οι δύο προς την ίδια κατεύθυνση. Εριξαν συνολικά περισσότερες από πέντε σφαίρες και αμέσως μου ακούμπησαν το όπλο στο κεφάλι μου και μου φώναζαν “φύγε, φύγε”. Με καθοδήγησαν να κινηθώ προς την οδό Πιπίνου και εν συνεχεία προς πλατεία Αττικής. Στο φανάρι με την οδό Λιοσίων μου φώναξαν “φύγε γρήγορα, αεροδρόμιο”. Παραβίασα τον ερυθρό σηματοδότη και τότε διαπίστωσα ότι ένα περιπολικό με ακολούθησε και μου έκανε σήμα να σταματήσω».

Το δεύτερο σκέλος του σχεδίου δολοφονίας περιέγραψε ο ίδιος ο Αριστείδης Πάπα, που εξετάστηκε από τα στελέχη της υποδιεύθυνσης Ασφάλειας Αθηνών. Είπε χαρακτηριστικά ότι ένας φίλος του από το σχολείο με το προσωνύμιο Ορλάντο τού ζήτησε να συναντηθούν στις 8 το βράδυ στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα, όπως και έγινε. Είπε ακόμα ότι, μαζί με τον Ορλάντο, στο ραντεβού ήρθε ένα ακόμα άτομο ονόματι Ανι και ότι όλοι μαζί πήγαν στην οδό Λυσάνδρου για να καπνίσουν χασίς χωρίς να φαίνονται.

The court file of the case shows that, on the eve of the attempted assassination, 34-year-old Aristides Papas was spotted by police officers of the DIAS team on a skateboard in the center of Athens. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and was armed with a Turkish-made Baikal pistol. Already having bullet wounds in his arms and legs from previous attacks against him, he knew better than anyone that his life was in immediate danger.

The arrests

Ultimately, the investigation by the Athens Security Sub-Directorate was completed on March 13 and led to five arrests. Three of the suspects are accused of having actively participated in the plot to assassinate the Pope. The rest are allegedly involved in cases drug trafficking in the center of Athens.

The final chapter in this bloody case was written on Sunday in Sepolia, with eyewitness accounts stating that the perpetrator of the murder of Aristides Papas escaped in a… taxi.
