Yesterday, the Albanian government closed the Zacharia prison in the city of Kruja, which has become notorious for its inhumane conditions for prisoners suffering from serious mental health problems.

This particular detention facility for people with quadriplegia, serious mental illnesses, and other difficulties was not only under-functioning, but also dilapidated.

Yesterday, albanian justice Minister ulsi Manja Announced That The 319 prisoners are being Transferred to the reconstructed sen koli Prison, Where they will be provided with the necessary care and appropriate facilities.

Manja also said that the detainees' stay at Saint-Colly will be temporary, as they will be permanently transferred to a specialized institution managed by the Ministry of Health.

In recent years, a number of national and international human rights organizations have called on Albania to close the prison and ensure proper care for prisoners with mental health problems.

However, Albania lags significantly behind in both the health sector and its prison system, with conditions reminiscent of other primitive times.
