Frentis Beleris in the European Parliament | “Risk of extinction for the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul”

The risk of extinction of the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul was highlighted in his intervention in the European Parliament by MEP Frentis Beleris, calling for specific measures for its preservation and renewal.

Mr. Beleris focused on the historical, cultural and religious presence of Hellenism in Istanbul, pointing out that it is part of the European identity.

"It's not just a community of the past. It's a community that must have the ability to continue to exist in the future," he stressed.

He made particular reference to his own experience in the struggle for the rights of the Greek National Minority in Northern Epirus, emphasizing that the protection of a minority requires the creation of appropriate conditions so that its people can remain, return and create in their homeland on equal terms.

In this context, Frentis Beleris warned of the dramatic shrinkage of the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul, noting that maintaining the current situation is not enough. As he pointed out, positive measures are needed, substantial support for repatriation and real opportunities for young people to return, get educated, work and build their lives in Istanbul.

At the same time, he raised the issue in its European dimension, asking for it to be essentially part of the dialogue between Europe and Turkey.

"The protection of minorities is, after all, an integral element of European values," he noted, arguing in favor of specific support measures and keeping the relevant reference open.

Concluding his intervention, frentis beleris Sent A clear message about the future of the greek Orthodox community of Istanbul.

"A community is not preserved by memory alone. It is preserved when its people can return, re-establish roots, and give life to the place they still call home."
