Around 2,000 Albanian migrants who have travelled illegally to Britain this year claim to be minors.

According to the British Immigration Minister, Robert Jenrick, one in five male migrants who come to the country claim to be 18, in the hope that this will benefit them from asylum. Unaccompanied children are less likely to be arrested if their asylum claim is rejected.

A report by the "Daily Telegraph" reports that 10 thousand Albanians have arrived in small boats during 2022, out of a total of 40 thousand migrants who have crossed the English Channel so far.

"Almost 20% of men arriving at the Western Jet Foil reception centre in Dover claim to be under 18, but the number is clearly lower. If we need to make further legal changes, we will," said Robert Jenrick.

The government tightened rules earlier this year, allowing officials to check and verify the age of immigrants if their appearance or behavior suggests they are over 18.

Home Office data shows that of the 1,696 cases where the age of a migrant child was questioned during the past year, 1,118 of them, or in other words 66%, were found to be over 18 years old.

Home Office officials are meanwhile struggling to find suitable accommodation and asylum housing, amid fears that another 10,000 migrants could cross the Channel in the next six weeks before New Year's.

The Manston Asylum Centre, which accepts migrants from Dover, is currently hosting 1,200 refugees, while the centre's capacity is for 1,600. Last week, Manston was overcrowded, with 4,100 migrants in the centre.
