200 Albanian prisoners will be transferred from Great Britain to Albania to serve the rest of their sentences.
The agreement was reached during discussions between the two prime ministers, Rishi Sunak and Edi Rama, during talks in London in March this year. At the end of last year, there were 1336 Albanians in prisons in England and Wales.
The reason for this agreement is related to two factors, economic and prison overcrowding. 17 prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment will be the first to be transferred to Albania.
One of the prisoners has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Teacher Sabina nessa and will be repatriated.
For a prisoner in a maximum security prison the cost in Great Britain for a year is 57,000 pounds, while in Albania it is 10,000 pounds per year. London will pay for the prisoners to serve their sentences in Albanian prisons, but now at a lower cost.
Under the deal, an Albanian prisoner is released a year early and given £1,500 if he agrees to be deported and never return to Britain.
They are warned that if they return to England without permission, they will immediately return to prison to serve the remainder of their sentence.
